Original Universe or Alternate Universe? Original
Personality: What does every sky pirate need? Swagger, of course. Or at the least a bunch of self-confidence, and Balthier has it in spades. He’s never one to doubt himself or his decisions, and always has a plan (or at least pretends to, usually with an escape route built in just in case). He always prefers going in with the plan rather going in blind, and is always in favor of the sneaky way around rather than charging in head first, and doesn’t keep fighting when retreat is the better option. He has a quick mind and wit, able to easily follow the machinations of politics, and see further ahead than the immediate goals, the consequences that will come of actions, rash or otherwise. He will drop a word of caution where need, and quietly try to steer those he cares about away from their inevitable dooms.
He fancies himself the leading man, and so is always willing to volunteer his opinion on a subject and lead, but will just as easily follow if he feel it’s worth it, or he knows he simply won’t get through the stubbornness of his companions. Thankfully, he doesn’t rub it in their faces when the plan goes awry, though a snarky comment or two is always available, just to make sure his point is proven. His bravado is tempered with a healthy dose of both cynicism and caution, never quite trusting anyone or anything except Fran, and always looking for the angle to work in his and her favor, and never doing anything for free (he actually asks Ashe for her wedding band as a form of payment to help her, at least until he finds the treasure he’s been looking for). He has a distrust of those in power, garnered from his past as an Imperial Judge before he defected, often questioning their motives, and never takes them at their word, always looking for the bits hidden between, where he might find the truth. He tends to be slightly more trusting of men/women that are like himself, dashing and with flare, but he can also become exasperated by them if they are over the top (the best example being Al-Cid). He will more readily take them for their word and their intel, but chances are he would rather play the leading man alone. But just as he distrusts the words of those in power, he himself tries not to lie, or to fool people with his words. While he is not blunt and is fond of prose, he is honest, and he always keeps his word when he gives it (though it might require you set a little against it, depending on how much he trusts you).
Balthier has a surprising amount of loyalty to those he picks up along his adventures or ends up throwing his chips in with. Many times he could have abandoned Vaan when they first met, but still he helped him escape the Nalbina dungeons, and after meeting Ashe continued to aid her in her endeavors to reclaim the throne of Dalmasca and overthrow the empire. His loyalty is not easily gained, either, having spent his formative years with his father and in the grips tof the Empire. He more often expects treachery and back-stabbing, and he is willing to turn on people if he must, even his own blood it means his own survival, or stopping them from doing something truly heinous. On the surface it seems that he is only it for the promise of a great treasure, and at first he pretty well is, but by the end he truly does care for his companions, and sees the greater harm that will come if he lets his father and Vayne get their way. His is the leading man, and leading men are heroes.
